Special donation for SpecialEffect
We have given a donations totalling £2,600 to SpecialEffect, a Charlbury based charity that helps people of all ages with physical disabilities to use technology. This ranges from the creation and loan of modified video game controllers, to the provision of eye-controlled computers for people who are completely paralysed and often unable to speak.
SpecialEffect put the Oxford Round Table donations to very good use, purchasing equipment for their National Accessible Games Room. Thanks to donations, the Games Room is now a bigger, brighter, more uplifting, engaging and accessible high tech play environment for the severely disabled visitors and a place where SpecialEffect find a way for children and young adults to play, when often they can’t play in any other way. By expanding this facility, SpecialEffect has created a play environment far removed from hospital surroundings where many of their visitors spend too much of their time, making each visit to the Games Room a complete ‘escape’.
Working with the SpecialEffect team, each visitor, together with their family, finds a way to play, no matter what or how long it takes and no matter how profound or complex their disabilities. SpecialEffect finds a way for them to join in and be included in computer games, often for the very first time, providing the tools to build relationships and engage with family and friends.
Nick Streeter of SpecialEffect said, “Donations such as the Oxford Round Table’s help us to continue to support many severely disabled people and bring some very real benefits to their everyday life, not least an element of freedom and control - not to mention FUN - in their otherwise completely dependent lives. This can have the most profound and positive impact on their mental wellbeing and overall quality of life. The Oxford Round Table has played an important part in us being able to do this and we are extremely grateful.”
